Electric Cars: A Great Option for Menorca
Menorca is approximately 50 km across and already has a relatively well-developed charging infrastructure. However, the number of electric vehicles on the island remains low.
To increase electric vehicle adoption and encourage residents considering the purchase of a new vehicle to choose an electric option, the Menorca Island Council organised a campaign to raise awareness of how electric vehicles work and the benefits they can provide. These benefits include lower energy costs for households and a reduction in fossil fuel emissions.
The campaign targeted people planning to buy a new car who were either unaware of, or concerned about, the use and advantages of electric vehicles compared with conventional cars. To support this objective, a series of lectures and workshops was held in five municipalities during the first days of July, featuring three speakers:
Patrick Renau, President of the Volt-Tour Association (a non-profit organisation promoting electric mobility), José Pérez, Chairman of Ford Dealerships in Menorca, and Eduard Escolà from the Menorca Island Council.
During these events, the speakers explained how electric vehicles work and answered participants’ questions, particularly regarding charging, driving range, battery performance, and other common concerns. They also highlighted the advantages of electric vehicles, including lower operating costs, the convenience of home charging, environmental benefits, and the long-term reliability of modern EV technology. In addition, they helped dispel common myths about electric vehicles, such as concerns about battery lifespan and safety.
Attendance at the events was relatively modest, with approximately 50 participants in total. Nevertheless, the initiative will be repeated in the autumn, when conditions and timing are expected to be more favourable.
Lessons learned
It is always difficult to reach a target audience for a very specific topic, so future meetings will require a longer and more targeted communication strategy.
The timing of the events at the beginning of summer was also not ideal and should be reconsidered in future editions.
The most positive outcome was seeing how people who are planning to buy a new car become less hesitant and more willing to consider electric vehicles once the technology and its benefits are properly explained.
