On 18 December 2024, CIMe hosted a workshop in Ferreries, a small inland town and municipality on the island of Menorca, focused on the implementation of energy communities. The event formed part of CIMe’s ongoing efforts to empower citizens to actively participate in the energy transition by generating renewable energy locally and sharing it within their communities.
The workshop took place at the municipal facilities in Ferreries and brought together 19 residents from the town. Participants were introduced to the concept of energy communities, with a particular focus on the legal framework that defines how they operate. The session aimed to clarify what energy communities are, who can take part, and how they differ from more traditional energy models.
In addition to the legal aspects, the workshop highlighted the many benefits energy communities can offer to citizens. These include greater control over energy production and consumption, potential cost savings, increased energy independence, and positive environmental impacts through the use of renewable energy sources. Participants also discussed how energy communities can strengthen local cooperation and contribute to a more resilient energy system.
The workshop generated strong interest and constructive discussion among attendees, demonstrating a growing appetite in Ferreries for community-driven energy solutions. By providing clear information and practical guidance, CIMe continues to support citizens in turning interest into action and advancing the local clean energy transition.
