Replication of RECET Actions in Iceland

Strong Engagement from Municipalities in Climate Action Workshop

Representatives from municipalities across Iceland gathered for a dedicated workshop on climate action and energy transition, marking an important step toward strengthening local implementation of climate policies.

The workshop, organised by The Association of Local Authorities, Eimur, the Association of Municipalities and Regional Development in Northeast Iceland (SSNE), and the Westfjords Regional Development Board, brought together elected officials and municipal staff to share experience, tools, and practical approaches to accelerating climate action at the local level.

The event builds on the ongoing Rural Europe for the Clean Energy Transition (RECET) project, which aims to support municipalities in developing realistic and effective climate strategies.

Next steps

The workshop confirmed both the willingness and the need among municipalities to take further action in climate and energy transition. Participants highlighted the value of continued cooperation and practical support in developing and implementing climate measures.

The organisers will build on the outcomes of the workshop by:

  • Sharing a summary of key findings and proposed actions

  • Continuing to develop and refine support tools, including the Action Bank

  • Exploring opportunities for strengthened collaboration between state and local levels
