When the RECET work with the municipalities on their SECAPS (Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan) started we soon discovered that according to Icelandic climate law, carbon offsetting must be part of the plan.
Carbon neutrality is foreseen for Iceland by the Icelandic authorities in 2040, and almost certainly that will need to involve carbon offsetting to some point.
The problem facing us in the Westfjords (and probably elsewhere in Iceland) was that we did not know how to proceed.
How much should the municipalities offset, should they buy carbon credits on the voluntary market or produce their own? What are the requirements for carbon credit production, do they need to be certified, is it possible to do locally etc.?
So, we wrote up a short report on the matter towards the end of 2024, seeking to give answers how the municipalities could proceed, see;
