NordWetCap – RECET Legacy

Based on Vestfjarðastofa’s experience from preparing and presenting the Carbon Offsetting Report, as well as from working with municipalities on their climate action plans within the RECET project, the following challenges or barriers for carbon offsetting and local carbon credit production through wetland restoration were identified:

From Barriers to Action

To address the barriers identified through RECET, WRDO partnered with SINTEF in Norway and Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy in Denmark to establish NordWetCap. The project received DKK 945,815 from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ climate fund for a two-year period.

NordWetCap focuses on strengthening cooperation between landowners, building knowledge through training and addressing perceptions of wetland restoration through local dialogue and peer-to-peer learning.

The project started in January, with work now underway in the Westfjords to map drained land use and engage with local landowners.

NordWetCap – Nordic Capacity Building for Wetland Restoration and Climate Resilience

The overall objective of NordWetCap – Nordic Capacity Building for Wetland Restoration and Climate Resilience is to strengthen Nordic knowledge, capacity, and cooperation on ecosystem and wetland restoration through a combination of practical implementation, social engagement, and policy learning.

The project brings together partners from Iceland (Vestfjarðastofa), Norway (SINTEF), and Denmark (Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy) to develop and test new ways of restoring degraded wetlands and other ecosystems while building a stronger foundation for long-term climate resilience and sustainable land use across the Nordic region.
