From Microalgae to Megawatts: Exploring Clean Energy Solutions in the Mývatn Region
The RECET group and the Net Zero Islands Network at Krafla Geothermal Power Station in Northeast Iceland
In May, as part of a week of workshops and the joint seminar between the RECET project and the Net Zero Islands Network, Eimur welcomed international partners and colleagues to North Iceland. To conclude the programme, participants were invited on a study visit through the Mývatn area — a region where natural resources, innovation, and sustainability intersect.
As host of the gathering, Eimur was pleased to showcase local examples of how clean energy and innovative thinking are already shaping rural development in North Iceland. The visit highlighted how local knowledge and place-based solutions can contribute meaningfully to Europe’s wider clean energy transition.
One of the key stops was Mýsköpun, an innovative biotechnology company specializing in microalgae cultivation and research. Located in the geothermal area near Lake Mývatn, the company cultivates native microalgae strains in closed glass-tube photobioreactors. The process uses clean Icelandic water and geothermal energy from nearby power production, offering a strong example of circular thinking and efficient use of local renewable resources.
The programme continued with visits to some of the region’s most distinctive geothermal and natural landmarks. Participants explored the geothermal fields of Námaskarð, before touring Krafla Geothermal Power Station, one of Iceland’s key geothermal facilities, with an installed capacity of around 60 MW of electricity. The day concluded at Goðafoss, a site renowned for both its natural beauty and cultural significance.
More than a field visit, the tour offered space for reflection and exchange. It underscored the potential of combining renewable energy, innovation, and community-driven approaches to support sustainable development in rural and remote regions. The experiences shared during the visit provided valuable inspiration for RECET partners working to advance clean energy transitions across Europe.
Eimur extends its thanks to all partners and guests for their engagement, collaboration, and the many insightful conversations during their time in North Iceland.
